Usually when I make a design I start of with a plan.  Like for the tanukis I recently posted, I initially just started by trying to put down colors and markings.  I ended up scrapping the first one and sitting down to decide where I wanted to go with he next ones!  For one, I decided I wanted to go with a fancy and king type vibe, but not like…English royalty look.  I guess basically what I’m saying is that when I design characters I try to have a prevailing feel or theme throughout the whole design.  Hopefully that answers your question!
